Transport in Seoul

Seoul has one of the most advanced public transport systems in the world. Visitors can easily move around the city using the underground railway, buses, taxis and smart transport cards like T-money.

Underground Railway (Subway

Seoul has an extensive and efficient underground railway system. Each line is colour-coded and station signs are displayed in multiple languages, making it easy for visitors to navigate the network.

The T-money card is an electronic smart card used on the subway, buses, taxis and even convenience stores. You can load money onto the card and the fare is automatically deducted as you travel. Using T-money often gives small discounts compared to paying single fares.

Tips:

  • Stations are clean and well-marked.
  • Train frequency is high, even during off-peak hours.
  • Maps and announcements are available in English.

Buses

Seoul’s bus network is extensive, affordable and covers areas that the subway may not reach. Some major bus stops have information in English, and most buses display their destination in English on the front.

While bus drivers usually don’t speak English, the services are reliable and frequent.

Fun note:
Korean bus drivers are known for being fast! Hold on tight when going around corners.

Extra tip:
Buy a “bus carte 10” card — it allows unlimited distance for a total of 10 bus rides.

Taxis

Seoul offers several types of taxis suitable for different budgets and group sizes.

Types of taxis:

  • Regular taxis: Usually orange; affordable and widely available.
  • Deluxe taxis: Black with a gold stripe; higher comfort and service level.
  • Jumbo taxis: Can carry up to 8 passengers; ideal for families or groups.

Most taxis use a meter, and many accept T-money or credit cards.
Navigation may be easier if you show your destination written in Korean.
